A theoretical term in Japanese music. It is a concept that is mainly used in relation to vocal melody, and is not often used in relation to musical instruments. It has various meanings depending on the field and the occasion. First, in the broadest sense, it refers to the melody in relation to the words, or the vocal parts in relation to the instrumental parts. This is what is meant by fushi when talking about stanzas. Next, in Noh chanting, the parts that are composed musically, that is, the yowagin and tsuyogin parts, are called fushi. In this case, it refers to the uncomposed kotoba. In vocal melodies, particularly beautifully composed melodies can also be called fushi, and in Heikyoku, a piece that aims to feature such melodies is called a setsubono.
