An applied science that investigates geology as an environmental factor for agriculture and forestry. In Japan, Wakimizu Tetsugoro (1867-1942) was the pioneer of this field. It was the mainstream of applied geology during the Meiji and Taisho eras. Knowledge about the formation and properties of soil, and the formation of landforms, owes a great deal to geology. In the Kansai and Sanyo regions, bald mountains are concentrated in the Hanakoiwa Mountains, but the rice paddies in this area produce high-quality rice. In addition, the Paleozoic mountainous areas of this region are often planted with cedar trees, making them suitable for fruit cultivation.
