Located on the east coast of New South Wales, Australia, Sydney is the second largest city in the state. Population: 466,000 (1995). Located at the mouth of the Hunter River, Sydney is an industrial city with the agricultural and livestock areas and coalfields of the basin, and is particularly known for its steel industry (started in 1915) and the refining of lead, zinc and aluminium. It has one of the country's leading ports and exports coal, wheat and steel. It is home to Newcastle University (established in 1965). Founded in 1804, Sydney developed as a coal producing region and was incorporated as a city in 1985.
