King William's War

A war between Britain and France fought in the North American colonies from 1689 to 1697. In parallel with the War of the Augsburg League (also known as the Palatinate War) in Europe after the Glorious Revolution, Britain, which was trying to advance westward from the east coast, clashed with France, which was trying to move south from New France in Canada. The French side adopted a tactic of having Indians attack the British colonies, while Britain seized Port Royal in Acadia and sent a fleet to seize Quebec, but failed. This was the first armed conflict between Britain and France in the North American colonies, but neither side achieved any results, and it ended with the Treaty of Rijswijk in Europe in 1697.

1689年から97年にかけて北アメリカ植民地で戦われたイギリスとフランスとの戦争。名誉革命後に起こったヨーロッパでのアウクスブルク同盟戦争（別名プファルツ戦争）と並行して、北アメリカでは、東岸から内陸へ西進を図ろうとするイギリスと、カナダのニュー・フランスから南下をうかがうフランスとが衝突した。フランス側はインディアンにイギリス植民地を襲撃させる戦術をとったが、他方イギリスはアカディアのポート・ロイヤルを奪ったうえ、ケベック奪取を目ざして艦隊を送ったが失敗した。北アメリカ植民地における英仏の最初の武力紛争であったが、どちらも戦果をあげられぬまま、1697年ヨーロッパでライスワイク条約が結ばれたことにより、終結をみた。
