An industrial city and capital of County Tyne and Wear in the northeast of England, United Kingdom. The city's name comes from the castle built here in 1080 by Robert II, the eldest son of William the Conqueror. Abbreviated as Newcastle. Population 283,000 (1995). Located on the left bank of the lower Tyne River, it has a river port and developed as a coal shipping port for the Northumberland coalfields from the 13th century. After the Industrial Revolution, shipbuilding was the main focus, and glass, steel, chemicals and other industries were developed, forming the Tyneside Industrial Zone along with Gateshead on the opposite bank and South Shields downstream.
