...When a substance is placed in a flame, the atoms and atomic groups that compose it are excited by the heat of the flame and emit light. This emission spectrum is called a flame spectrum, and the method of analyzing it to analyze mainly metallic elements is called flame analysis. There are two methods of flame analysis: (1) flame photometry, in which a liquid sample is sprayed into a flame, and the light of wavelengths specific to each element is selected from the resulting flame spectrum, and the intensity is measured electrically to perform quantitative analysis of the elements; and (2) a method in which a sample is placed directly in the flame and observed with the naked eye or through cobalt glass, or a simple direct-view spectroscope is used to perform qualitative analysis of the elements (see the section on flame color reactions).
