It refers to digging the bottom of a river, lake, or ocean over a wide area, and is distinct from underwater excavation, which is done for localized construction work. Increasing the water depth through dredging increases the cross-sectional area of ​​water flow in rivers, increases the amount of water that can be stored in lakes, and ensures a route for ships in ocean areas. Dredged soil is generally used for landfill. Recently, dredging has become common in the removal of soil containing harmful substances and accumulated sludge containing large amounts of organic matter, which must be removed for pollution and environmental reasons.

河川、湖沼、海域などで、広い面積にわたって水底を掘ることをいい、局所的な工事のために水底を掘る水中掘削とは区別される。浚渫によって水深を増加させれば、河川では通水断面積が増加し、湖沼では貯留水量が増え、海域では船舶の航路が確保されるようになる。浚渫された土砂は一般には埋立てに利用される。最近では有害物質を含む土砂、有機物を多量に含む堆積(たいせき)汚泥など、公害対策、環境対策のうえから除去が必要となることがあり、これらを浚渫する工事も行われるようになった。
