Achelōos - Achelōos (English spelling)

A river god in Greek mythology. Also the largest river in ancient Greece, located in Aetolia. He is the son of Oceanus and Tethys, the ancient gods who lived before Olympus, and the oldest of the 3,000 river brothers. He is also said to be the son of the sun god Helios and the earth god Gaia, or the sea god Poseidon. He mated with Melpomene, the goddess of intelligence, to give birth to the Sirens, and also mated with other goddesses and muses, becoming the father of many springs, such as Peirene, Castalia, Dirce, and Callirhoe. He fought with Hercules over the marriage of Oeneus' daughter Deianira, and transformed himself into various forms, but when he transformed into a bull, Hercules broke its horns, and he gave his daughter to him.

ギリシア神話の川神。また、アイトリアにある古代ギリシア最大の川。オリンポス以前の古い神々オケアノスとテテュスの子で、3000の川の兄弟の最年長者。太陽神ヘリオスと大地の神ガイアの子、または海神ポセイドンの子ともいわれる。知性の女神メルポメネと交わってセイレンたちを生み、またほかの女神ムーサたちとも交わり、ペイレネ、カスタリア、ディルケ、カリロエなどの多くの泉の父となった。オイネウスの娘デイアネイラとの結婚をめぐってヘラクレスと争い、さまざまな姿に身を変えたが、牡牛(おうし)に変身したときにヘラクレスがその角を折ったので娘を譲った。
