(1) The virus and its route of infection The virus is an RNA virus with a spherical particle diameter of 27 nm. Infection occurs through oral infection with the hepatitis A virus (HAV), which is excreted in the feces of hepatitis A patients. In endemic areas, well water is often the source of infection.
