1883‐1945
German-born Brazilian ethnologist. Although he did not receive a university education, he conducted field surveys almost every year from 1905 until his death among the Tucuna people, laying the foundations for scientific Indian research in Brazil. He is known for his efforts to make contact with many tribes. He abandoned his German surname Unkel, adopted the name given to him by the Guarani people as his official surname, and naturalized in Brazil in 1922. He published many papers in German, English, and Portuguese, but is particularly known for his research on the Gé-speaking tribes such as the Timbira, Apinaye, and Xerente, which have been translated into English by R.H. Lowy.

ドイツ生れのブラジルの民族学者。大学教育は受けなかったが，1905年以来トゥクーナ族の間で死亡するまで，ほぼ毎年現地調査を実施，ブラジルにおける科学的インディオ研究の基礎を築いた。数々の部族と接触しようと努力したことで有名。ドイツ姓ウンケルUnkelを捨て，グアラニー族より受けた名を正式の姓として22年にブラジルに帰化。ドイツ語，英語，ポルトガル語で数多くの論文を発表したが，なかでもジェ語族のティンビーラ，アピナイエ，シェレンテなど諸族の研究で名高く，これらはR.H.ローウィにより英訳出版されている。
