1883‐1945 German-born Brazilian ethnologist. Although he did not receive a university education, he conducted field surveys almost every year from 1905 until his death among the Tucuna people, laying the foundations for scientific Indian research in Brazil. He is known for his efforts to make contact with many tribes. He abandoned his German surname Unkel, adopted the name given to him by the Guarani people as his official surname, and naturalized in Brazil in 1922. He published many papers in German, English, and Portuguese, but is particularly known for his research on the Gé-speaking tribes such as the Timbira, Apinaye, and Xerente, which have been translated into English by R.H. Lowy. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
