This is the former area of ​​Maebashi City in the central-eastern part of Gunma Prefecture. It was established as a town in 1889. It was incorporated into Maebashi City in 1954. It is at the end of the eastern foothills of Mt. Haruna and has long been the center of Kozuke Province. Soja Castle was built in the late Middle Ages, and in the Edo period it was a town and village on the side of the Mikuni Kaido road. The area was centered on agriculture and commerce, and is a production area of ​​kokeshi dolls. There are many historical sites, including a group of ancient tombs such as Hotoyama Kofun and Futagoyama Kofun (both nationally designated historic sites), and the ruins of Sanno Temple (nationally designated historic site).

A shrine where the deities of various shrines are enshrined in one place. It began in the Heian period. Most are the head shrine of a province, but there are also head shrines for a district or village.

各所の神社の祭神を一ヵ所に勧請し,合祀した神社。平安時代に始る。多くは一国の総社をいうが,一郡,一郷の総社もある。
