Soja - That's right

Japanese: 総社 - そうじゃ

This is the former area of Maebashi City in the central-eastern part of Gunma Prefecture. It was established as a town in 1889. It was incorporated into Maebashi City in 1954. It is at the end of the eastern foothills of Mt. Haruna and has long been the center of Kozuke Province. Soja Castle was built in the late Middle Ages, and in the Edo period it was a town and village on the side of the Mikuni Kaido road. The area was centered on agriculture and commerce, and is a production area of kokeshi dolls. There are many historical sites, including a group of ancient tombs such as Hotoyama Kofun and Futagoyama Kofun (both nationally designated historic sites), and the ruins of Sanno Temple (nationally designated historic site).

A shrine where the deities of various shrines are enshrined in one place. It began in the Heian period. Most are the head shrine of a province, but there are also head shrines for a district or village.

群馬県中東部，前橋市中西部の旧町域。1889年町制。1954年前橋市に編入。榛名山東裾野の末端にあり，古くから上野国の中心をなす。中世末期には総社城が築かれ，江戸時代は三国街道脇往還の街村。農業および商業を中心とした地区で，こけしの生産地。史跡が多く，宝塔山古墳，二子山古墳（ともに国指定史跡）などの古墳群，山王廃寺跡（国指定史跡）などがある。
