This is a collection of essays published in June 1887 when Hakubunkan was founded. The first volume was 80 pages in the Kiku format and priced at 10 sen. It selected the best essays from various academic journals and included 17 essays by Nakamura Masanao, Kato Hiroyuki, Tsubouchi Yuzo (Shoyo), and others. This format was modeled after Western anthologies, and since it included the "famous essays and theories of various masters" in one volume, it became popular and sold well, reaching over 10,000 copies, with four reprints per month. From the second volume onwards, it was published monthly, but both volumes caused controversy due to unauthorized reproduction, and it was subsequently published independently.
