Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory

After leaving Japan, he studied under A. Dohrn at the Naples Marine Laboratory, and later served as an assistant professor at Harvard University, director of the Milwaukee Marine Laboratory, professor at Clark University, and professor at the University of Chicago. He also served as director of the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, and worked hard to solidify the institute's foundations for 11 years since its founding in 1888. His contributions to zoology can be broadly divided into three areas:

From the Marine Laboratory

...a laboratory established on the coast primarily for experimental and ecological research in marine biology. The oldest such laboratory is the Laboratoire maritime de Roscoff, established in 1872 at the University of Paris by H. de Lacaze-Duthiers (1821-1901), and the Stazione zoologica di Napoli, established in 1873 by the German AD Dohrn (1840-1909) at his own expense.
