In the mid-Edo period, new fields were opened on a reed-covered land downstream of the Kiso River under contract to townspeople. The name of the new fields was derived from the surname of the developer. As it spreads out in front of Ootawara Shinden, it is also called Ootawaramae Shinden. Kobe Bunzaemon, a lumber merchant from Nagoya, came up with the idea of developing new fields during the Hoei period as an investment for the funds he had accumulated. He calculated that by investing in new fields, he would be able to amortize the principal and interest in ten years at a 10% interest rate, which was far more profitable than the household loans he was making to senior vassals of the Nagoya domain at the time. Approved in 1707 (4th year of the Hoei period). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
