A former town in Awa County in southern Chiba Prefecture. Most of the area is hilly. Urban areas have developed in the Amatsu and Kominato districts along the Sotobo Line, both of which have fishing ports. Seicho-ji Temple is located on Kiyosumiyama in the Amatsu district, and Tanjo-ji Temple is located in the Kominato district. Fish caught here include horse mackerel, mackerel, and saury. The coastal area is part of Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park, and includes Tai-no-ura. Incorporated into Kamogawa City in February 2005. 43.95 km2 . Population: 7,627 (2003). 千葉県南部,安房(あわ)郡の旧町。大部分が丘陵地。外房線に沿う天津・小湊2地区に市街地が発達,ともに漁港をもち,天津地区清澄(きよすみ)山に清澄(せいちょう)寺,小湊地区に誕生寺がある。アジ,サバ,サンマなどを漁獲。海岸部は南房総国定公園に属し,鯛ノ浦(たいのうら)がある。2005年2月鴨川市へ編入。43.95km2。7627人(2003)。
