Alternative spelling Ahmednagar. A city in the western part of Maharashtra state, western India. It is the administrative capital of Ahmednagar district. It is located about 200 km east of Mumbai (Bombay) and is a strategic location for transport and military purposes. It was founded as the capital in 1490 by Ahmad Nizam Shah, the founder of the Nizam Shahi dynasty, one of the five dynasties formed by the division of the Bahmani dynasty, a Muslim dynasty in the Deccan. It was conquered by the Mughal Empire in 1633 and became the base for Emperor Aurangzeb's Deccan expedition. It came under the control of the Marathas in 1760 and the British in 1803. The tomb of Emperor Aurangzeb is located on the outskirts. Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned in Ahmad Nizam Shah's fort in the 1940s. There are cotton and leather processing industries. Population: 181,015 (1991).
