A town in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. It is located about 35 km north of Kumbakonam. In the 11th century, Rajendra I of the Chola dynasty established the capital here. There are Hindu temples, including the Brihadeeshwara Temple, which was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) in 1987, as well as the remains of palaces and fortifications.
