731‐806 A Quranic reciter and grammarian during the Abbasid period. He was of Iranian origin and became a mawla (ward) of the Arab Assad tribe. He learned Arabic from the Bedouins of Najd and Hijaz, and then went to Basra to study under Khalil ibn Ahmad. He eventually became the representative of the Kufa grammar school. He was also one of the seven orthodox Quranic reciters. He served the caliph Harun al-Rashid and was the tutor to his sons Amin and Ma'mun.
