A Quranic reciter and grammarian during the Abbasid period. He was of Iranian origin and became a mawla (ward) of the Arab Assad tribe. He learned Arabic from the Bedouins of Najd and Hijaz, and then went to Basra to study under Khalil ibn Ahmad. He eventually became the representative of the Kufa grammar school. He was also one of the seven orthodox Quranic reciters. He served the caliph Harun al-Rashid and was the tutor to his sons Amin and Ma'mun. He is famous for his grammar debate, in which he used cunning to defeat Sibawayh.

アッバース朝時代のコーラン読誦者,文法学者。イラン系で,アラブのアサド族のマウラー(被護民)となり,ナジュドやヒジャーズのベドウィンからアラビア語を学び,さらにバスラに出てハリール・ブン・アフマドに師事し,やがてクーファ文法学派の代表者となった。また7人の正統コーラン読誦者の一人でもあった。カリフ,ハールーン・アッラシードに仕え,その子アミーンとマームーンの家庭教師をつとめた。奸計を用いてシーバワイフを退けた文法論争は有名。
