An old tale. One of the stories about getting rich, with the theme that a person who shows kindness receives an unexpected reward. At the end of the year, an old man goes to sell cloth woven by an old woman to do his New Year's shopping. On the way, he sees a roadside Jizo covered in snow. The old man buys a hat with the money he makes from selling the cloth, puts it on the Jizo and goes home. The old woman is also happy. In the middle of the night, the Jizo brings gold and silver as thanks. The old man and old woman are able to have a good New Year. The story of a girl who puts a hat on a rain-soaked Kannon and finds happiness is also known as a lucky charm for temples all over the country. Kasadera-cho Kasadera-cho in Minami-ku, Nagoya is commonly known as Kasadera, and its lucky charm is also included in the old Joruri "Kasadera Kannon Goengi" (around 1677). The old tale of "Ryugu Doji" tells of a man who throws a New Year's pine decoration into the sea at the end of the year receiving from the Dragon Palace a boy who is able to produce gold from his body, and "Kasa Jizo" also has a story of rice coming out of Jizo's body. These are tales based on the idea that one can become one with a foreign land in the New Year. There are other old tales of people gaining wealth by being kind to a visitor on New Year's Eve. One example is the old tale of "Odoshi no Kyaku," in which a shabby traveler is given a place to stay, only to find that he has turned into a nugget of gold by New Year's morning, and the old tale of "Otoshi no Hi," in which a man is given a coffin in exchange for fire, only to find that it contains gold. The old tale of "Kasa Jizo" is based on the belief that the gods make their rounds on New Year's Eve, and the idea of ​​kindness in presenting a hat to the gods and Buddhas is likely linked to the story of the gods' rounds on New Year's Eve. This type of folk tale with the wanderings of gods as its theme developed as Christian religious tales in Europe, but has also spread to non-Christian regions of East Asia.

昔話。親切を施した人が、思いがけない謝礼を得ることを主題にした致富譚(たん)の一つ。年の暮れに、爺(じじ)が、正月の買い物をするために、婆(ばば)の織った布を売りに行く。途中、道端の地蔵が雪をかぶっているのを見る。爺は、布を売った金で笠を買い、地蔵にかぶせて帰る。婆も喜ぶ。夜中に地蔵がお礼に金銀を持ってくる。爺と婆は、それでよい正月を迎えることができる。雨にぬれている観音に笠をかぶせてやった娘が幸せをつかむという話は、各地の寺院の縁起としても知られている。名古屋市南区笠寺町の笠覆寺(りゅうふくじ)は通称を笠寺といい、その縁起は、古浄瑠璃(こじょうるり)の『笠寺観音御縁起』（1677ころ）にもなっている。「竜宮童子」の昔話も、年の暮れに門松を海に投げ入れた人が、竜宮から、金を体から出すことのできる童子をもらう話であるが、「笠地蔵」にも、地蔵の体から米が出たという話がある。これらは、新年には異郷と一体化できるという観念を基盤にした説話である。年越しの夜に来訪者を親切にしたために富を得る昔話は、ほかにもある。泊めてやったみすぼらしい旅人が、元日の朝は金塊になっていたという「大歳(おおどし)の客」の昔話や、火種をもらうかわりに、棺桶(かんおけ)を預かったら、中身は金であったという「大歳の火」の昔話などがある。年越しの夜には神の巡遊があるという信仰を背景にした昔話で、「笠地蔵」の昔話も、笠を神仏に贈る親切の趣向が、年越しの夜の神巡遊の説話に結び付いたものであろう。この種の神の巡遊を主題にした昔話は、ヨーロッパではキリスト教的な宗教譚として発達しているが、非キリスト教地域の東アジアにも広がっている。
