Laotian politician. Known in Japan as Souphanuvoong. Born into the royal family, he is Phoumas' half-brother. In 1945, he organized Lao Issara (Free Laos) and led the anti-French independence movement. In 1950, he became chairman of the Neo Lao Issara (Free Laos Front) and Prime Minister of the Provisional Resistance Government. In 1956, he became chairman of the Neo Lao Hakxart (Lao Patriotic Front). In 1962, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Planning in the coalition government. In 1963, he clashed with the right wing and moved to Kankai, the base of the Pathet Lao. After the Lao civil war resumed, he became chairman of the Lao National Union Political Council when the Provisional National Union Government was established in 1974. When the Lao People's Democratic Republic was established in December 1975, he became chairman of the Supreme People's Assembly and the first president. In 1979, he became chairman of the Lao National Construction Front. In 1991, he resigned as president and essentially retired from politics. →Pathet Lao
