The name of the Independent Exhibition, an exhibition held after World War II that was open to all and not judged, commonly known as "Anpan." There are two known exhibitions with the same name. One was started in December 1947 by the Japan Art Association, and the other was started in February 1949 by the Yomiuri Shimbun (commonly known as the "Yomiuri Independent Exhibition"). The former mainly brought together artists with strong social tendencies, and is still held once a year today. In contrast, the latter, while striving to introduce various trends from overseas, was always a stage for the emergence and activity of young artists until around the "anti-art" era of 1960, and played an extremely important role in postwar Japanese art.
