A gulf of the North Sea on the east coast of central Scotland in the UK. It is an estuary of the River Forth, stretching from Alloa, the mouth of the Forth, to the Isle of May, where it meets the North Sea, with a length of about 90 km and a maximum width of 30 km. Like fjords, it was formed by glacial erosion and submersion, but the coast is dominated by plains and hills, and cities such as Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy, and ports such as Messil and Grangemouth have developed. There are also many resorts and golf courses. Two Forth Bridges, one for the railway (2,528 m long) completed in 1890 and one for the road (2,504 m long) completed in 1964, are built in the west central part of the gulf, and it is also connected to the Firth of Clyde by the Forth and Clyde Canal (completed in 1790).
