"Africa" (Petrarch)

[Epic Tradition]
However, it is safe to say that epic poetry dominated Italian literature from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. Petrarch had already been honored as poet laureate in Rome for his Latin epic poem Africa (begun around 1338), and Boccaccio wrote the epic poem Tesseida (1340-41), modelled on Virgil and Statius, but the first Renaissance work to be published was L. Pulci's Morgante (1483). This epic poem is a kind of parody of heroic poetry, and the mixture of classical and medieval chivalric tales that began in this way was passed on from MM Boiardo's Orlando in Love, through L. Ariosto's Orlando Mador (definitive edition 1532), the greatest epic poem of the Renaissance, to T. Tasso's Jerusalem Liberated (1565-75), the greatest epic poem of the Baroque, and finally culminated in G. Marino's Adone (1590-1616), a work with an extremely musical style.
