Syngman Rhee Line

Japanese:
Syngman Rhee Line

The line that South Korean President Syngman Rhee established on January 18, 1952 in the "Declaration of Maritime Sovereignty" to claim sovereignty over the vast waters around the Korean Peninsula. In some places, the line extended nearly 200 nautical miles from the coast. The Declaration of Maritime Sovereignty claimed sovereignty over the resources of Korea's continental shelf, and also claimed sovereignty over the surface, underwater and seabed natural resources of the aforementioned waters. This declaration was made in order to prevent Japanese fishing boats from fishing in the waters around South Korea, following the abolition of the MacArthur Line (1952), which restricted Japanese fishing after World War II. South Korea seized many Japanese fishing boats both before and after the declaration. The Syngman Rhee Line was effectively abolished by the Japan-Korea Fisheries Agreement of 1965.
