A reaction to introduce the nitroso group -NO into organic compounds. Four representative methods are described below. (1) In compounds with activated benzene rings such as dimethylaniline and phenol, the corresponding nitroso species can be obtained by reacting them with nitrous acid HNO _2. (2) The Grignard reagent is reacted with nitrosyl chloride NOCl. (3) Amines are oxidized with peroxomonosulfuric acid H ₂ SO ₅ (Caro's acid). (4) Hydroxylamine is oxidized with potassium dichromate K ₂ Cr ₂ O ₇ in the presence of acid.
