[raw]? [Died] 66 Roman politician and writer. His real name was Titus Petronius Niger. He was a capable consul and governor of Bithynia, but even more so, he had a special talent for the pursuit of pleasure, and was called the "arbiter elegantiae" (judge of grace) at the court of Emperor Nero. However, he incurred the Emperor's displeasure and was ordered to commit suicide, but he is said to have died elegantly, spending his last few hours in pleasure. The details of his death are beautifully depicted in Henryk Sienkiewicz's Quo Vadis. Petronius' Satyricon is a kind of villain novel written in the so-called Menippian satura style, which combines prose and verse, and is said to be the first novel in Western Europe.
