Pâté - Pâté (English spelling)

Pâté - Pâté (English spelling)

A French film company founded in the early days of the film industry. Charles Pathé (1883-1957), who began his business in 1894 selling Edison phonograph shows and kinetoscopes, founded Pathé Frères with his brothers in 1896. In 1901, he teamed up with Ferdinand Zecca (1864-1947) and began full-scale film production. Zecca mass-produced films at an astonishing pace and pioneered a variety of genres including comedy. Actor Max Langeaux, who was discovered by Zecca and officially signed with Pathé, became hugely popular in the "Max" series (1910-1919), becoming one of the earliest comedy film stars. Pathé established branches and affiliated companies around the world, and developed into the world's largest film company, involved not only in film production, but also in the manufacturing of cameras, projectors, and raw film, as well as distribution and exhibition, and came to be known as the Pathé Film Empire. In 1922, the company developed a small 9.5mm home film. It released projectors, films, and cameras, and spread them all over the world, becoming familiar as the Pathé Baby. However, after the outbreak of World War I, Pathé's strength waned along with the decline of French cinema. In 1929, Bernard Natan (1886-1942) took over management and tried to improve the company's management as Pathé Natan, but the company went bankrupt in 1936. It was revived as Pathé Cinema in 1943, and after the war, it produced commercial films by Julien Duvivier and Marcel Carné, and also focused on foreign collaborations. Since the mid-1960s, the company has focused on reorganizing and distributing its theater network and producing television programs, rather than on film production. Currently, under the name "Pathé," the company is involved in film production, distribution, exhibition, and software sales.
