This old town occupies the hills in the southern part of the Shimabara Peninsula in Minamitakaki District, Nagasaki Prefecture. Land reclamation has progressed, and rice, potatoes, vegetables, and mandarin oranges are cultivated. The small peninsula that juts out to the southeast is home to the remains of Hara Castle (historic site), site of the Shimabara Rebellion, and Hara Castle Hot Springs. The Shimabara Railway runs through the town. In March 2006, Minamitakaki District's Katsusa Town, Kuchinotsu Town, Kitaarima Town, Nishiarie Town, Arie Town, Futsu Town, and Fukae Town were merged to form Minamishimabara City. Area: 23.24 km2 . 長崎県南高来(みなみたかき)郡,島原半島南部の丘陵地を占める旧町。干拓も進み,米作,ジャガイモ・蔬菜・ミカン栽培が盛ん。南東に突出する小半島には島原の乱の原城跡(史跡),原城温泉がある。島原鉄道が通じる。2006年3月,南高来郡加津佐町,口之津町,北有馬町,西有家町,有家町,布津町,深江町と合併し市制,南島原市となる。23.24km2。6457人(2003)。
