A waterfall in the mountains of Nachi, Nachikatsuura-cho, Wakayama Prefecture. It is the first of the 48 Nachi waterfalls (large waterfall), and hangs over a cliff of quartz trachyte covered in a primeval forest of Japanese cedar and cypress. It is 133m high and 12-13m wide at the mouth. It is the object of worship of the Hiro Gongen, a branch shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine. It appears as "Nachi Falls" in "The Pillow Book," and in "The Tale of the Heike," it is written that "The water of the falls, rising threefold, climbs thousands of feet." It is also mentioned as a famous place in poetry in "Yakumo Gosho," and was written about by Saigyo and others.
