Nachi Falls

Japanese: 那智滝 - なちのたき

A waterfall in the mountains of Nachi, Nachikatsuura-cho, Wakayama Prefecture. It is the first of the 48 Nachi waterfalls (large waterfall), and hangs over a cliff of quartz trachyte covered in a primeval forest of Japanese cedar and cypress. It is 133m high and 12-13m wide at the mouth. It is the object of worship of the Hiro Gongen, a branch shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine. It appears as "Nachi Falls" in "The Pillow Book," and in "The Tale of the Heike," it is written that "The water of the falls, rising threefold, climbs thousands of feet." It is also mentioned as a famous place in poetry in "Yakumo Gosho," and was written about by Saigyo and others. In 2004, it was registered on the World Heritage List of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes of the Kii Mountain Range under the World Heritage Convention.

和歌山県那智勝浦町，那智山中にある滝。那智四十八滝の一ノ滝（大滝）で，スギ，ヒノキの原始林におおわれた石英粗面岩の断崖にかかる。高さ133m，幅は落口で12〜13m。熊野那智大社の別宮飛滝(ひろう)権現の神体。《枕草子》に〈那智の滝〉とみえ，《平家物語》には〈三重に漲りおつる滝の水，数千丈までよぢのぼり〉などと記される。また歌名所として《八雲御抄》などにあげられ，西行らに詠まれている。2004年紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道として世界遺産条約の文化遺産リストに登録された。
