Forbidden Planet

...There are countless other works that are neither supernatural nor nonsensical, such as Roger Corman's (1926- ) "The Atom Beast" (1956), in which a gangster and a stripper are attacked by a three-eyed cannibalistic mutant among the few survivors of a nuclear explosion that destroys civilization (this setting is also common in low-budget science fiction and is still made today). These rarities came to be called "Z" movies or "Z" trash. In the midst of this rush of science fiction ranging from the best to the worst, MGM, a prestigious Hollywood company, tried its hand at science fiction for the first time, producing "Forbidden Planet" (1956), a major work by F. M. Wilcox (1905-64) that was a space adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest." The idea that the doctor's subconscious, not wanting his daughter to be taken away by the young explorer, transforms into an invisible monster and attacks the spaceship was a brilliant science fiction idea for the time, but since the film wouldn't work if it remained invisible, the scene where the monster is caught in an electromagnetic barrier and hit by a barrage of laser gun fire, and a carnivorous beast-like figure emerges surrounded by red sparks (created by animators I.G. Rees and J. Meadow, who were seconded from Disney Productions), is very impressive.
