A religious movement that arose among American Indians in the 19th century. At the time, Indians were socially, economically, and politically oppressed by white people. In 1869, an Indian prophet appeared and said that the dead would return to this world, drive the white people out of Indian land, and create a world of bliss. He then said that the dead would arrive when people were immersed in a dance (ghost dance) taught to them by the dead, and enthusiastic dancing was performed in various places. The movement soon died down, but in 1889, another prophet appeared and encouraged the ghost dance, and the movement spread to other places.
