A term in Japanese music. The name of the tuning of the koto. This is the main tuning that Yatsuhashi Kengyo used for kumiuta and danmono, and is the most commonly used in later koto music. The fifth string is tuned in the descending form of the intone scale (relative pitch Mi Fa Ra Si Do Mi). The first string is tuned to the same pitch as the fifth string or one octave lower, and from the second string onwards, the strings are tuned one octave lower than the seventh string, resulting in relative pitch. When playing with three strings in an ensemble, the first string is tuned to the first string of the koto for Niagari, and when it is tuned to the third string for Honcho. When playing with Kumoi-style koto, the second string is tuned to the first string of Hirachoshi.
