Gakuonji Temple

Japanese: 楽音寺 - がくおんじ

A temple located in the south of Hongo-cho, Toyota-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture. Founded by the Numata clan, who were the development lords of Numata Manor, it is currently a Shingon Buddhist temple, but was a Tendai Buddhist temple before the Oei period (1394-1428). It is said that many temples stood here during the heyday of the Middle Ages, but today only the main hall and a few other buildings remain. According to the Rakuonji Engi, the temple was founded by Fujiwara Tomozane in the 940s to repay the favor of being granted the seven districts of Numata by imperial decree after he put down the rebellion of Fujiwara no Sumitomo with the miraculous powers of the guardian Buddha statue of Yakushi.

広島県豊田郡本郷町南方にある寺院。沼田（ぬた）荘の開発領主であった沼田氏の創建した寺であり，現在は真言宗であるが，応永(1394‐1428)以前は天台宗であった。中世の盛時には多くの坊が立ちならんでいたというが，いまは本堂と若干のお堂が残っているだけである。楽音寺縁起によれば，天慶年中(940年代)藤原倫実（ともざね）が護持仏薬師小像の霊験で藤原純友の乱を平定し，沼田七郷を勅賜された恩に報いるため創建した寺院という。
