Japan-Ming Trade

Japanese: 日明貿易 - にちみんぼうえき

During the Muromachi period, trade between Japan and the Ming Dynasty was conducted using treasury ships. The background to this was the Ming Dynasty's demand to suppress the Wako pirates and the Muromachi Shogunate's pursuit of trade profits. It began in 1401 with the dispatch of tribute envoys by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and in 1404 it took on the form of tribute treasury ships. It was temporarily discontinued during the reign of Yoshimochi (1411-1431), but was resumed by Yoshinori in 1532, and ended in 1547. Exports included swords, sulfur, and copper, while imports included copper coins, and later raw silk and silk fabrics. It contributed to the transplantation of the Ming Dynasty.

明国の倭寇禁圧要求と室町幕府の貿易の利益追求が背景。1401年足利義満の朝貢使派遣で始まり，'04年より朝貢勘合船形式となる。義持のとき一時中絶（'11〜31）したが，'32年義教 (よしのり) が再開，1547年に終わる。輸出品は刀剣・硫黄・銅など，輸入品は銅銭，のち生糸・絹織物など。明文化移植に貢献した。
