A branch of chemistry that studies complexes. Traditionally, it has often been called complex salt chemistry. It is sometimes treated as the same as coordination chemistry. While many organic compounds can be derived by substituting various groups on basic molecules such as methane and benzene, many inorganic compounds contain complexes formed by the coordination of various ligands to a central atom, making this one of the most fundamental fields of inorganic chemistry. The starting point of this field was the late 19th century, when the German AG Werner solved the previously incomprehensible structures of ammonia compounds, hydrates, and other transition metal salts using his coordination theory. 錯体を研究の対象とする化学の一部門。従来,錯塩化学ということが多かった。配位化学と同意義に取り扱うこともある。有機化合物の多くがメタンやベンゼンなどの基本的な分子を各種の基で置換して誘導できるのに対し,無機化合物では,中心原子に各種配位子が配位して生ずる錯体を含むものが多いことから,この分野が無機化学の最も基礎的なものの一つであるといえる。 19世紀の終りころ,ドイツのA.G.ウェルナーがそれまで理解できなかった遷移金属塩のアンモニア化合物,水和物その他の構造について,彼の配位理論によって解決したのがこの分野の出発点である。
