A high-quality newspaper with an elite readership. In Japanese, it is called a "luxury paper." It is used in contrast to entertainment-oriented tabloid newspapers that are widely read by the masses. They have a high proportion of public news, such as international, political, and economic news, and have a large social influence, but their circulation is relatively small. In many countries, there is a bipolar structure of high-quality papers with small circulations and tabloid papers with large circulations. This term was created in the UK against the backdrop of a social structure with advanced stratification, and representative examples include The Times and The Guardian (both in the UK), The New York Times (USA), Neue Züricher Zeitung (Switzerland), and Le Monde (France).
