A Greek lyric poet from the mid-6th century BCE. He began writing narrative lyric poetry in the style of Stesichorus, and wrote sung tales of Pelias' funeral games, the capture of Troy, the Calydonian boar hunt, and other Sicilian legends. He then moved from Sicily to Samos, where he became active at the court of the tyrant Polycrates, leaving behind seven volumes of poetry, mainly choral songs. Only about 160 fragments remain, and in addition to narrative poems, many of his works are love songs.
