〘名〙睡眠中、呼吸に伴って軟口蓋(なんこうがい)が振動し、鼻や口から音を発すること。また、その音。睡眠によって軟口蓋の筋肉の緊張がゆるむことによって起こる。〔新撰字鏡（898‐901頃）〕※枕（１０Ｃ終）二八「あながちなる所に隠しふせたる人のいびきしたる」[語誌]動作の表現としては、当初、挙例の「枕草子」に見えるイビキスルなどの形があったが、現在一般的なイビキカクは中世以降に見られるようになる。
