During the Ansei era (1854-1860), there were about 20 earthquakes of various sizes, each causing some damage, including the Nara-Yokkaichi earthquake in June 1854 (July 1854), the Tokai earthquake on November 4 of the same year, the Nankai earthquake on the following day, the Edo earthquake on October 2, 1855 (November 11, 1855), and the Northern Hida earthquake in February 1858 (April 1858). Of these, the Tokai, Nankai, and Edo earthquakes are also known as the Ansei Three Great Earthquakes. The Tokai and Nankai earthquakes are both estimated to have had a magnitude of 8.4, and both earthquakes caused great damage from tsunamis. The death toll from the Nankai earthquake was 2,000 to 3,000, while the death toll from the Tokai earthquake is thought to have been less than this. The Edo earthquake had its epicenter near the mouth of the Arakawa River, and although localized, damage was great, with fires breaking out in over 30 places in the city, the stone walls of Edo Castle collapsing, various gates collapsing, 14,346 houses destroyed or burned, and approximately 7,000 people in the city dead, including Fujita Toko and Toda Houken.
