1479‐1533 Grand Prince of Moscow, Russia. Reigned 1505-33. Son of Ivan III. Mother of Sophia Palaiologue, niece of the last Byzantine emperor. Continuing his father's policies, he promoted the unification of Russian territory and worked to centralize the Muscovite state. During his reign, the principalities of Pskov, Ryazan, and Novgorod-Seversky were annexed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow. He also abolished the Polotsky Principality and confiscated its territories. In domestic affairs, he gradually favored the Josephites who supported his centralizing policies, suppressing nobles such as Shuisky and Bolotinsky, as well as opponents within the church such as Maxim the Grech and Basian Patrikeyev.
