The American Legion was formed among soldiers of the American European Expeditionary Force during World War I, and was legalized in September 1919. It was later joined by veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and its membership numbered approximately 2.62 million (1982). It is one of the most powerful pressure groups in the United States, and has achieved notable results, such as obtaining and increasing pensions and survivor's pensions, as well as the enactment of the GI Bill of Rights (1944), which established educational and economic assistance for veterans.
