Rose of the Valley - Rose of the Valley

Japanese: ジャケツイバラ - じゃけついばら
Rose of the Valley - Rose of the Valley

A deciduous vine of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). It grows 1-2 meters tall, with long, vine-like branches and strong, sharp thorns. The leaves are large, 20-40 cm long, even-pinnately compound, and have inverted rachises. The leaflets are oblong and 1-2 cm long. From April to June, the vines bear racemes 20-30 cm long at the ends of the branches, and produce many bright yellow flowers. The flowers are bilaterally symmetrical, horizontal, 2.5-3 cm in diameter. The 10 stamens are separate and protrude outside the flower, with red anthers. The legumes are elliptical and 7-10 cm long. They grow in sunny areas such as mountains and riverbanks, and are distributed in Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures west of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. The name comes from the resemblance of the vine to a snake twisting around itself.

The Chinese name for this species is sometimes called Yunjitsu, but Yunjitsu refers to the parent variety of Rosa arborescens, which is used as an antidiarrheal, malaria medicine, and anthelmintic.

 本種の漢字名として中国名の雲実をあてることがあるが、雲実はジャケツイバラの母変種をさす。これは下痢止め、マラリアの薬、駆虫薬などにする。
