Japanese: シラサギ(白鷺) - シラサギ

A general term for birds of the Heronidae family that are entirely white. White-colored Great Egrets, Intermediate Egrets, Little Egrets, and Japanese Egrets live in Japan, and the species can also include the Cattle Egret (whose head and chest are orange during the breeding season) that lives outside of the breeding season. Another rare migratory bird is the Chinese Egret (Near Threatened (Ministry of the Environment's 4th Red List)). They build nests in groups in bamboo and pine forests in the lowlands south of Honshu. Intermediate Egrets travel south for the winter, but many Little Egrets and Great Egrets remain in Japan during the winter. They mainly eat animal matter such as American crayfish and small fish in wetlands and rivers.
