These are typical reddish-brown or light brown haniwa that are cylindrical and have several raised bands on the outside. Some are known as morning glory shaped, with an open rim. There are usually circular holes between the raised bands. In ancient burial mounds, they were placed in rows of one to three layers at the base of the mound, and are thought to have served as a kind of decoration or fence.
