866‐912 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 886-912. Greek name: Leōn. Son of Basil I, he ascended to the throne after his father's death. A scholarly emperor with a deep knowledge of all subjects, he was called the "Wise Emperor." He revised the Corpus Juris Civilis, published the 60 volumes of the Basilica Code, and issued 113 edicts to improve the law. However, he was defeated by King Simeon of Bulgaria (896) and lost Taormina in Sicily to Islamic forces (902). He concluded a trade treaty with King Oleg of Kiev (911), expanding Byzantine influence in this area. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
