These choral songs were written to praise the victors of the ancient Greek athletic contests, namely the Olympian, Pythian, Nemean, and Isthmian Games. The famous composers of these games were Pindar, Simonides, and Bacchylides, who lived from the end of the 6th century BCE to the first half of the 5th century BCE. Pindar's songs, which combine the physical beauty of the athletes with the pride of the poet in his command of poetic language in a powerful composition that transports the reader away from this earth, represent one of the pinnacles of Greek linguistic sensibility.
