A mask used in Kagura. It is not used in Imperial Kagura, but is used in the village Kagura that is passed down in various regions. In Kagura, which is a ritual to appease the souls of the dead, a purification dance to purify the dancer and the harvested items, and a yutate are performed, but masks are not used for these. After that, in the entertainment section, which looks forward to the descent of the gods, a dance using masks is performed, influenced by ancient Sarugaku. There are many types of masks, including Okina masks, female masks, god masks, and demon masks influenced by Sarugaku Noh masks, as well as masks unique to each region, clown masks such as Daikoku masks, Hyottoko masks, and Okame masks, and animal masks such as monkeys and foxes. In addition to wooden ones, there are also paper ones.

神楽に用いられる面。宮中の御神楽では用いないが，地方に伝わる里神楽で使用する。鎮魂の儀式としての神楽では，舞人や採物を清める清めの舞や，湯立などを行うが，それには面を用いない。その後，神の降臨を仰ぎ行う余興の部分に，古猿楽の影響により面を用いた舞が行われる。面の種類は多様で，猿楽能面の影響を受けた翁面，女面，神面，鬼面などのほかに，その地域独自の面や大黒面，ひょっとこ面，おかめ面などの道化面，あるいは猿，狐などの動物面も用いられる。木製のほかに紙製のものもある。
