A long-term rebellion against Spain was fought on the island of Bohol in the south-central Philippines, which was under Spanish colonial rule, from 1744 to 1829. Its leader was Francisco Dagohoy (? - late 18th century?), a resident of the town of Inabaga on the island of Bohol. In 1744, Dagohoy's younger brother, who worked as a policeman in the town of Inabaga, was ordered by the parish priest to arrest a heretic, but was killed in a duel. However, the parish priest refused to hold a funeral for his brother, on the grounds that he had died in a duel, which is forbidden in Christianity. Infuriated, Dagohoy called on his neighbors to rise up in revolt. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
