Bering Landbridge

Japanese: ベーリング陸橋 - ベーリングりっきょう（英語表記）Bering Landbridge

This refers to the land that became land near the present Bering Strait during the Upper Pleistocene glacial period. It is closely related to the route and timing of human migration to the New World, so it is also known as Beringia, and has attracted attention along with its paleoenvironment. It appeared when sea levels dropped due to glacier formation, and according to current knowledge, the land bridge existed from about 50,000 to 35,000 years ago and from about 25,000 to 10,000 years ago. During the coldest period of the Wisconsin glacial period, about 20,000 years ago, a landmass about 1,000 km wide existed from the present Chukwok Sea to the Bering Sea, and Alaska is thought to have been an extension of Siberia.

現在のベーリング海峡付近に，上部洪積世の氷期に陸化していた陸地のことをいう。人類の新大陸への渡来の経路および時期と深くかかわりあうので，その古環境とともに注目されており，ベーリンジアBeringiaともいわれる。氷河形成による海水面低下により出現したもので，現在の知見によると，陸橋が存在していたのは約5万年前から約3万5000年前までの期間と，約2万5000年前から約1万年前までの期間である。約2万年前のウィスコンシン氷期の最寒期には，現在のチュコート海からベーリング海にかけて，幅1000kmほどの陸地が存在し，アラスカはシベリアの延長であったと考えられている。
