In the history of world cinema, Denmark is known first as the country that gave birth to kisses and vamps, and then as the country that gave birth to Carl Dreyer, a great director worthy of the name of a master. In 1906, Nordisk, one of the world's first major film companies, was founded by Ole Olsen, and the country entered its first golden age in the 1910s. High society melodramas about adultery and crime by directors such as August Blom and Urban Gad brought "two indispensable elements, the vamp and the kiss," to the movies, and were a huge success around the world (according to Georges Sador's History of Cinema, the reaction was so great that "the lips touched each other sensually for a long time, and the woman, in ecstasy, threw her head back," which caused a scandal around the world).
